Mike Tindall, who is married to Zara Tindall, the daughter of Princess Anne, has opened up about his relationship with her grandmother, the Queen, and how it almost took a painful turn
Mike Tindall has shared a humorous anecdote about how his rapport with Queen Elizabeth II took a positive turn following a close encounter that almost led to an uncomfortable mishap. The 46-year-old former rugby star, who wed Zara Tindall—Princess Anne’s daughter—in 2011, shared the tale of their bonding moment during a Royal lunch where the late monarch inadvertently came close to injuring him.
He vividly recounted being seated awkwardly between two tables at the lunch, which posed a distinctive threat to his groin area. As the Queen endeavoured to move the tables closer together, Mike had to promptly caution her against causing an unfortunate squeeze.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mike conveyed the incident in his own words: “I sat next to her at lunch one day and I was sat between two table legs. It was really annoyingly close to my groin. She gets up and starts moving them [the tables] closer together.”
With a mix of respect and humour, he warned the Queen: “I said to her, ‘Ma’am, if you move them any closer, I’m going to be talking way high’. She laughed. My relationship with her changed after that, as I felt I could tell her anything.”
His discussion occurred amidst the backdrop of the lively Cheltenham Festival atmosphere—an event synonymous with horse racing and revelry—and it was whilst speaking to Raceday TV about the festival that Mike also touched upon his tactics for “liver management”.
Mike Tindall has candidly shared how he tactically sips on zero alcohol drinks to avoid getting inebriated during a day-long event at the races. He revealed: “All it takes is bumping into an old friend to push you over the limits.
“But with Guinness, you get a little zero and no one knows. A little Guinness Zero in the middle when no one knows. It goes a long way.”

He also mentioned his representation of the Royal Family at such functions, commenting: “This is what we call work. You choose the lanes that you work in. Everyone is here for a good time, and I can get on board with that.”
Mike Tindall hasn’t shied away from divulging details about his experiences within the Royal Family. During a conversation at a charity event, he recounted a slightly tense moment involving Zara’s mother, Princess Anne, in the lead-up to their wedding.
Speaking to Richard Eden, he explained Princess Anne’s wish for him to don Scottish trews for the occasion, a request he politely declined due to his background with the English rugby team. He joked about the familial pressure: “We got married in Scotland and Zara was schooled in Scotland. Obviously, my mother-in-law is patron of Scottish rugby.”
Addressing the persistent suggestions cheekily, he said: “They keep on that they need to get me a pair of trews. I am, like, ‘F*** off’. I have spent my whole life trying to kill a Scotsman. I don’t want to wear their trousers.”
