More than 800 people have signed a petition calling on the Post Office to keep a branch in Cyncoed.

Around 800 local residents have signed a petition set up by the Cardiff Liberal Democrat group calling on the Post Office to keep a branch in Cyncoed, Cardiff.

This comes after the Post Office counter inside McColl’s on Cyncoed Road closed on July 29 and the suburb lost its Clearwater Way branch in April 2018.

The Post Office said is looking for a new site so it can continue serving the local community.

Councillor Rodney Berman said: “I am pleased to report that more than 800 residents signed the petition to save the post office in Cyncoed Road in Cardiff that was closed temporarily on 29 July.

“The petition has been sent to Post Office headquarters and we are now awaiting their reply. This magnificent response to the petition demonstrates the strength of feeling in the local area, and the need to retain this essential service.

“We were encouraged by the earlier reply from Royal Mail and their regional manager to our request on behalf of residents to save this post office.

“The reply confirmed that Royal Mail is intending to relocate the local branch as soon as possible and the vacancy has been advertised on the Post Office’s website.”

Mr Berman said the group is “continuing to explore” options with other local businesses and is working with the Co-op store on Cyncoed Road.

Mr Berman said: “For many people in this area, getting to an alternative post office is not an easy option.

“Now more than ever we should be providing facilities that allow residents access to essential services without the need to get in the car or to travel a long distance.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrat councillors for Cyncoed and I will continue to work hard to find a satisfactory solution to the relocation of the local branch on Cyncoed Road and will keep residents informed of future developments.”

Those who support the proposal to open a Post Office branch at the Co-op on Cyncoed Road can support for their local Co-op store visit www.coop.co.uk/yoursay, and quoting local store code 4298.
