Mourners pack Truro Cathedral to remember dad who was hit by a car

Mourners packed Truro Cathedral this morning to say a final farewell to a much-loved father and husband. Ryan Saltern, 31, from Truro, died following a road accident at St Teath on July 28.

Mr Saltern had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. His injuries were consistent with having been struck by a vehicle.

Following his death his family paid tribute to him saying that his memory would live on forever.

The family said: “Ryan was an exceptional, loving, kind and happy husband, father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, uncle, son-in-law, brother-in-law, cousin, and best friend to many.

“He will be severely missed and the devastation has affected not just our family, but everyone who was lucky enough to have met him.

“He touched the hearts of many and his memory will live on forever.”

Mr Saltern’s funeral was held at Truro Cathedral on Monday (September 23) morning with many of his family and friends wearing red to represent his love for Manchester United and job at Royal Mail.

 

Prior to the service getting underway at 11am mourners streamed in wearing either smart attire with red ties or flowers, Manchester United shirts or Royal Mail uniform.

Pallbearers carried Mr Saltern’s coffin from the funeral car, through the rain and into the cathedral draped in a Manchester United emblem.

A celebration of his life took place after at Lanhydrock Golf and Country Club.

Hard-working Mr Saltern married his teenage sweetheart Cath in September 2013 and together had one son, Harry.

A JustGiving website page set-up to help Cath wife and Harry has raised over £11,000.

An extract from the page read: “Ry’s positivity and outlook was so incredibly infectious to everyone lucky enough to have known him. He was a best friend like no other to many, he cherished and was incredibly invested in every one of his friendships.

“Ry had the ability to make you laugh with his quick wit, comical timing and wonderful expression. His dad jokes and puns were second to none.

“Ry encouraged others to strive and was sincerely proud of their achievements. Ry was empathetic and went above and beyond to help those in need, he would ride the journey with you and offer support at the drop of a hat.

 

“Ryan took so much pride in his work and was a valued and notable team member. He played a huge part within each workplace whether that was BT, Spectrum or his recent profession at Royal Mail.

“He always had a big smile and friendly nature during his rounds within Truro and neighbouring areas. He was so efficient and so hardworking because he knew the sooner he finished his round, the sooner he could be home with his beautiful family.”

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and are appealing for witnesses.

A 39-year-old man, who is local to the area, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failure to stop. He was released under investigation pending further enquiries.
