MP calls for action as Evesham residents left without a post box

THE MP for West Worcestershire has given her support to a campaign for a post box to be returned to full service, writes Mia Whitehouse.

Dame Harriett Baldwin met with the local residents of Long Carrant Park, near Evesham, to hear their complaints about Royal Mail refusing to replace a post box in their area which was damaged in a traffic incident.

There is a mile long detour to find an alternative to the now out of service post box that was at a lay by on the busy A46, when it is required by the Royal Mail regulator, OfCom, that access to a post box should be no further than half a mile.

Dame Harriett said: “I’ve campaigned for many years to improve road safety along the A46 and it seems perverse that this decision means more people having to walk along a busy and dangerous main road.

“I understand that the residents at Long Carrington Park have offered a new post box a home near to the residential park which will mitigate some of the extra risks people used to take using the old post box.

“Over recent years, the network of post boxes has gone into decline and I’d like to see Royal Mail go to the extra mile to make it easier for people to use their services.”

The MP has agreed to support the campaign and has invited the chief executive of Royal Mail to see the problem first-hand and try to make a change.

Royal Mail has been approached for comment.
