Watford’s MP witnessed the hard work by postal workers as the town’s delivery office deals with double its normal volume over Christmas.
Matt Turmaine brought 150 mince pies for Royal Mail workers in Caxton Way during a visit on Friday morning (December 20).
The guided tour offered an insight into what it takes to deliver letters and parcels during the busy period, with Watford Delivery Office having hired 32 new recruits and an additional 30 seasonal workers with 17 extra vehicles for the Christmas peak.
The Labour MP said: “The posties work hard all-year-round, but especially so at Christmas. There was clearly a good spirit at the delivery office, morale is high, deliveries are bang up-to-date and the mince pies went down a treat.
“Like most people I tend to only see the postie at my door, so it was very interesting to see how the operation works from the inside.”
He was shown where letters are sorted into rounds, the parcels delivery holding area, and spoke to workers as well as lead customer operations manager Ian Searle and Communications Workers Union representative Matty Waugh.
Mr Searle said: “It was great to have Matt visit our delivery office, and to show him how we geared up for our peak period.
“We’ve pulled out all the stops to deliver Christmas for our customers.”
