Much-loved Bristol brunch spot could move over the road into larger venue

A popular cafe on Stokes Croft could move over the road into the new Carriageworks development after being granted a premises licence. The Crafty Egg would move into a larger space on the ground floor of the Carriageworks, and start opening in the evenings too.

The Crafty Egg was granted a premises licence by Bristol City Council during a hearing on Thursday, August 24. While the plans are not yet confirmed, the new premises licence is one step closer for the cafe towards the move, and would allow the sale of alcohol until 11pm.

Speaking during the licensing hearing, cafe owner Ben Bennett said: “The business has been well established in Bristol now, with an alcohol licence already. We’re hoping to move into a bigger venue to be able to recruit more staff and seat more customers.”

The Carriageworks building lay derelict for decades but was recently converted into apartments. Last month Bristol brewery Left Handed Giant was also granted a premises licence for a new bar on the ground floor of the building, but it’s unclear when this will open.

The Crafty Egg is considered to serve some of the best brunches in Bristol

Crafty Egg also opened a new cafe in Fishponds in April last year. The cafe first opened on Stokes Croft in 2016.

Both branches often have queues outside, particularly for weekend brunches. Currently only the Fishponds venue opens in the evenings, with the Stokes Croft branch closing at 3pm.

One reviewer wrote on Google this week: “Great breakfast, food amazing as always, had the baked eggs with cheese and it was amazing. Was a little wait outside but definitely worth it and the staff were lovely and friendly.”
