Narrow Mason Trophy defeat for Boston bowlers

Boston IBC ladies played Lincoln in the Mason Trophy and a very close game ensued.

The contest was level and an extra end was needed to decide who went through to the next round.

On this occasion Lincoln won.

The Boston team were very disappointed to lose after giving their county rivals a tough task.

Carlton Road’s drive to win the Orchard Health Group Division One title is looking unstoppable, and they are being helped by their closest rivals Eastenders, who keep letting points drift away.

In the Boston Indoor Bowls League this week, the Road negotiated a tough encounter against Holland Fen, but they successfully picked up all the points with and overall win of 44-21.

Eastenders were matched against IBC. For the Enders, Keith Tointon, Stuart Moore and Paul Flatters triumphed 25-15, but it was for four points only as Wayne Phoenix, Mark Whyers and Matt Whyers lost 17-15 to Alex Seaton, Steve Cornwell and Richard Pearson.

Third-place Invaders had no problems winning 59-17 overall against Invaders for six points.

The teams in mid-table, Jolly Farmers and A40, both picked up maximum points at the expense of Punchbowlers and Boston Park.

Bottom team Red 5 played second-from-bottom Breakaways and it was the former who came out on top to go level on points with their opponents.

Bill Hodges, Mandy Cook and Bob Zlody won 26-10 and Colin Price, Neil Owen and Ian Smith triumphed 27-13.

In the T&B Containers Division Two, the top two went head-to-head this week.

And it was the leaders Royal Mail who won the higher share of the points as Jo Sharp, Jill Smith and Keith Sharp defeated Poachers’ Bob Tingey 20-14. Replying for Poachers, Mike Campion, Denis Robins and Mick Dodes snatched two points.

Nomads, in fourth spot, had too much strength for Dynamics and skips Mel Maddison and Barry Beagles won 22-10 and 27-9.

Golfers also picked up all six points from Central. David Marshall won 23-5 and Gordon Gallichan picked up a hot shot on the last end played to win 23-19.

What a close game Cosmos had with Patriarchs. Dave Fox, for Cosmos, picked up a last-end count of one to force a tied game with Alan Westrup while Bob Thompson, with what looked like a comfortable lead of 12-8 at 13 ends, dropped counts of 3-1-1 to lose 13-12 to Mick Rate as underdogs Patriarchs won five points.

Autos and the Burtons shared the rink points but higher team Autos won the aggregate points with an overall win of 50-25.

The top three in the Cammacks Division Three all picked up maximum points.

Leaders Pilgrims, matched against Fairways, won on both rinks for an overall score 60-15.

Second-place Vikings played fourth-place Hotspurs and Vikings skips Doug Staples and John Stray produced winning scorecards of 27-17 and 18-10.

Third-placed Vectors were matched against the Saxons.

For Vectors, Kevin Rockall established a comfortable lead right from the onset of the game and won 18-7.

Nick Whitmore, with a 18-7 lead at 16 ends, saw the margin reduced as Tracey Hodgson made some headway but Nick won 18-14.

Amateurs versus Bias saw the lower team Bias winning the aggregate points with an overall win of 34-22.

U3 versus Shipmates saw the latter triumphing with rink wins of 22-14 and 21-8.
