Bangkok – The Royal Thai Navy has held a religious ceremony to pay homage to the protective spirit and the guardian goddess of boats. The ceremony was arranged to bless 14 barges, including royal ceremonial barges which will be used in a procession to celebrate His Majesty the King’s coronation later this year. The Royal Thai Navy will conduct a rehearsal on August 22.
The Commander of the Royal Thai Navy, Adm. Luechai Ruddit, presided over the ceremony which was carried out in accordance with traditional procedures. The Department of Fine Arts has also arranged for a traditional dance to take place before the barges are moved on Friday.
The Deputy Chief of Staff of the Royal Thai Navy, Vice Adm. Jongkol Meesawad, said 52 barges and 2,200 personnel have been prepared for the royal barge procession this year. The procession will follow the same route as that used in the reign of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great, which is from Wa Sukri Pier to the Temple of Dawn, covering a distance of 4.2 kilometers. People living along the river have been asked to decorate their houses for this special occasion. Members of the public are invited to watch the procession from vantage points on both sides of the river.
The ultimate royal barge procession, as part of year long celebrations of King Vajiralongkorn’s coronation, is to take place on October 24.
