Neil Warnock set to leave job after TWO weeks as club want to avoid ‘decision they regret’

Neil Warnock came out of retirement to lead Torquay a fortnight ago but the club are already closing in on a new boss, but insists they want to avoid a decision they “may later regret”

Neil Warnock is due to step away from his gig at Torquay – just two weeks after he came out on retirement to help the National League South side.

The former Sheffield United boss, now 77, decided to return to management a fortnight ago and returned to Plainmoor, where he had managed in the early 1990s. It was a huge shock to see Warnock back, but he could be gone as quickly as he arrived with the club’s managerial search ramping up.

Warnock has held a role as advisor to the club’s board since 2024 and began the unpaid role after Torquay sacked former manager Paul Wotton at the end of February. With Warnock in charge the club claimed two wins from four games, leaving them fourth in the table.

But Torquay are closing in on a new boss with the veteran manager admitting he’s not given an opinion on what their next steps should be.

He said: “The interview process has taken place, they have got in mind the people or the person that they want. Now it is just a matter of the board dealing with it really. I know the candidates, but I said to the board that they have to do their due diligence.

“They have spoken to me about it, but I haven’t really given an opinion. They need to appoint who they feel is the right one, having made the decision to let Paul (Wotton) go. I am sure they’re working really hard, they’ve been all over the place in the past couple of days – welcome to my world! They’ve been doing hard work getting interviews, we’ll have to wait and see now.”

In a statement from the board on Saturday afternoon, the club admitted they wanted a new boss in place as soon as possible, but wanting to avoid a decision “we may regret”.

They said: “On the managerial situation, we know supporters are keen for clarity, and so are we. The process to appoint our new manager is progressing at speed, but this is a hugely important decision for the medium-term future of Torquay United. It is one we simply have to get right.

“While we all want matters concluded as quickly as possible, it is more important that the Board completes a thorough process and secures the best possible candidate for our football club than rushes a decision we may later regret.”

Torquay were relegated from the Football League in 2014 and have been in non-league ever since. As recently as 2012 they were playing in the League Two play-offs, finishing seventh and fifth in consecutive seasons. Now they are trying to return to the National League, step five of the English pyramid.
