Netflix audiences shun The Crown as the British royal drama fails to make the top ten

The Crown’s third series has failed to make Netflix’s top ten most watched shows of the year – despite having a blow-out budget of £50million.

The British royal drama, which returned with an explosive third season last month, was pipped to the post by a number of US-made shows, including new fantasy favourite The Witcher, which reached number one and sci-fi thriller Stranger Things, which came in at number three.

The Crown was widely considered to be Netflix UK’s flagship show in 2019, as it returned with a brand new all-star cast, including Olivia Coleman and Helena Bonham Carter.

It is the second most expensive TV show ever made, with reports claiming each hour-long instalment costs £5million and £9.8million.

The Crown’s third series has failed to make Netflix’s top ten most watched shows of the year despite having a blow-out budget of £50million

Netflix even made the premiere of the season available for free in the UK for non-subscribers, as the hotly anticipated series made its comeback in November.

However, the latest series of The Crown – which introduced fans to key royal events from the 1960s and 1970s – has been surpassed on the rankings by The Witcher at the number one spot, followed by After Life starring Ricky Gervais.

It is likely The Crown’s late release may have been a factor in the show not ranking in the top ten, however The Witcher – which hit the number one spot – was released it its entirety on December 20.

A Netflix spokesperson said: ‘The Crown is one of many great titles that we’re really proud of and loved and watched by millions of our members this year but just didn’t quite make the Top 10.’

The Crown’s fourth season has now begun production, with actors Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin seen playing Charles and Diana for the first time.

The third season of The Crown sees a new guard sweep into Downing Street, as Queen Elizabeth and her family struggle to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing Britain.

From cold-war paranoia, through to the jet-set and the space age – the exuberance of the 1960s and the long hangover of the 1970s – Elizabeth and the Royals must adapt to a new, more liberated, but also more turbulent world.

Written by Peter Morgan, The Crown also stars Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon, Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten.
