New antique and vintage shop on Helston’s Wendron Street

Chris Disbury of Nosebag Curios shares his passion for unique, hand-picked treasures with the local community.

Chris, a former Helston Royal Mail postman of 20 years and a taxi driver, is embracing retirement with his new venture, which is close to his heart.

He told the Packet: “I grew up in a house full of antiques, and after years of car boot sales and collecting, it felt like the time to open a shop.”

Located on Wendron Street, in a building which once housed a butcher’s shop, Nosebag Curios – named after an antique nose bag Chris found online and inspired by a family joke – retains many of the butcher’s original features, including the hooks which used to hang meat.

The shop is already drawing attention from passersby and neighbouring businesses like Rotten Records, which is set to open officially in a few weeks, and JAC’s Barbers.

So far, the shop includes everything from brass and copper items to canvas and leather goods, nautical memorabilia, vintage advertising, old maps, binoculars, watering cans, and even a Newlyn School-style painting. There is also an old springer air rifle, a child’s Lederhosen, a variety of old furniture pieces, and even an old school wooden sleigh.

“We’ve done six or seven car boots this year, and with items I have collected over the years, we have managed to fill the shop,” Chris explained.

Chris has also partnered with other local collectors and dealers to expand the range to include vintage jewellery and accessories.

“We believe that adding an antique piece is the perfect way to make a house feel like a home, giving it a unique soul that modern items just can’t replicate,” he added.

Nosebag Curios is located at 12 Wendron Street and is open five days a week from 10am to 2pm. It will be closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
