New Brexit 50p coin revealed: Release date and design

A new 50p coin will be released to mark the UK leaving the European Union.

Three million coins will be released on Brexit day – Friday, January 31.

The design of the coin has now been revealed for the first time.

It bears the words ‘Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations’ and the date the UK officially leaves the EU.

Chancellor Sajid Javid said: “Leaving the European Union is a turning point in our history and this coin marks the beginning of this new chapter.”

A further seven million of the coins will be released later this year, the Government said.

As part of the launch, the Royal Mint will also open its doors for 24 hours to let people strike their own commemorative coins.

One thousand coins which were minted for the first date the UK was due to leave the EU – March 29, 2019 – had to be melted down.

A further one million coins were minted with the date of October 31, 2019 but they also had to be shelved when Brexit was delayed.
