New King Charles III stamp unveiled by Canada Post

Canada Post has unveiled a new stamp featuring King Charles III, marking the first time the freshly crowned sovereign has appeared on a Canadian stamp.

The stamp, which features a black-and-white portrait of the King, was issued starting Monday, following the monarch’s coronation Saturday. It also comes as the federal government announced Charles III will be the new face on Canadian coins and the $20 bill, replacing his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Canada Post said the new postage stamp will be definitive, “designed to serve the everyday needs and issued in indefinite quantities.” Commemorative stamps, by contrast, are typically issued on a significant date and printed in limited quantities.

The portrait of the King used on the new stamp was taken by Alan Shawcross. The postage is issued in a booklet of 10 domestic rate stamps. The cover features a photo of Charles III during his royal tour to Ottawa in 2022, when he was the Prince of Wales.

The King’s new stamp, revealed by Canada Post, continues the Crown corporation’s tradition of issuing definitive stamps featuring the Canadian sovereign. The practice started in 1851 with a pre-Confederation stamp of Queen Victoria, the new King’s great-great-great grandmother.

In February, Britain’s Royal Mail unveiled the design of its new stamp featuring the King. The image, which drew headlines for its simplicity and lack of a crown, was reportedly personally approved by Charles III. That stamp was issued starting April 4.

Charles III, 74, was officially crowned King at a pomp-filled ceremony in London on Saturday. He became the oldest person in British history to ascend to the throne, upon the passing of Elizabeth II last fall.
