Customers will now be able to send parcels across the UK using InPost starting at £1.99, compared to Royal Mail’s minimum of £3.25.
InPost, which was previously available to customers who bought or sold goods online, will operate a send and collect service through its 9,200 nationwide lockers, or a home delivery service.
The launch follows the Royal Mail hiking the price of first-class stamps by 30p to £1.65 in October due to “very real and urgent” financial challenges.
Prices to send a parcel to a home address start at £2.89, compared to Royal Mail’s £3.25 for small second class 16 x 35 x 45cm package.
For items being sent through InPost lockers, a small 8 x 38 x 64cm package will cost £1.99, medium items up to 19 x 38 x 64cm will cost £2.59, and large items up to 41 x 38 x 64cm will set users back £3.99.
For tracked 24-hour delivery, it starts at £4.25 while tracked 48-hour delivery starts at £3.39.
Neil Kuschel, boss of InPost UK, said: “With Send, consumers can send a wide range of items, from special gifts to everyday parcels, with the confidence that they will get to the recipient safely and securely.
“Whether it’s dropped off at their chosen locker or delivered straight to their home, there are no more queues, no more labels, just a lot of locker love!”
When announcing the price rise in October, chief commercial officer at Royal Mail, Nick Landon, said: “We always consider price increases very carefully.
“However, when letter volumes have declined by two-thirds since their peak, the cost of delivering each letter inevitably increases. We are proud to deliver the Universal Service, but the financial cost is significant.”
