A large structure is now being constructed where the Gala Bingo building once stood on St Ann’s Well Road
New pictures have shown the scale of progress at a demolished bingo hall that is being replaced by a large student flat complex. The project has moved on significantly since the start of 2022, when the site was just a pile of rubble, with a towering structure now being constructed where the Gala Bingo building once stood on St Ann’s Well Road, St Ann’s.
Developers had initially hoped to build 396 student flats, over nine-storeys in height, but this was reduced before the plans were passed by Nottingham City Council’s planning committee on January 20, 2021. However, Crown Student Living, who bought the site in May 2020, got permission in June 2022 to add extra rooms by redesigning the layout of the initial plans and repurposing “oversized apartment social space”.
This increased the potential number of flats from 356 to 426, surpassing the original plans that were scaled down previously. Concerns were raised prior to the plans getting permission in 2021, with the neighbouring Islamic Centre Nottingham Central Mosque mosque and local councillors both voicing worries over potential antisocial behaviour and loss of sunlight.

Meanwhile the old Royal Mail sorting office on Beck Street, which sits opposite the bingo hall and is referred to locally as the Bendigo building, is currently being torn down so it can be replaced by a more than 600-bed student tower.
