Royal Mail has teamed up with Historic Royal Palaces to issue a special set of stamps celebrating the rich history and cultural significance of the Tower of London. This collection features ten unique stamps that capture the essence of this iconic landmark, known for its “myth and legend, ceremony and tradition.”

The main set of six stamps showcases various elements of the Tower, including the White Tower, Tower Green, the King’s House, St John’s Chapel, the Yeoman Warders, Traitors’ Gate, and a raven, one of the Tower’s symbolic residents.

In addition to these, a mini set of four stamps highlights some of the Tower’s most notable historical prisoners. These include Anne Boleyn, Sir Walter Raleigh, Lady Jane Grey, and the young princes Edward and Richard, famously known as the “Princes in the Tower.”

David Gold from Royal Mail remarked on the Tower’s diverse historical roles, saying, “Over the centuries, the Tower of London has played many different roles—from impenetrable fortress to royal residence, menagerie of exotic animals to place of execution, Royal Mint to home of the Crown Jewels. These stamps celebrate the myth and legend, ceremony and tradition of one of the most famous buildings in the world.”

The Tower of London, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the heart of the city, draws around three million visitors annually. Built by the order of William the Conqueror in the 1070s, it served as a prison for over 800 years.

Jenny Smyth, the licensing manager at Historic Royal Palaces, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted that Royal Mail has joined our licensing program to commission the first-ever set of stamps depicting the Tower of London. With nearly 1,000 years of history to its name, we look forward to sharing the stories of the Tower with an even wider audience.”

These stamps not only honor the Tower’s historical and cultural significance but also provide a fresh perspective on its enduring legacy. You can order them directly from the Royal Mail website here.
