New system for posting parcels to US begins

A new system has been introduced for sending parcels to the US, three months after the service was suspended due to regulatory changes.

Guernsey Post said the suspension came after the US Government ended a system that allowed goods valued under $800 to enter duty free.

The changes meant all goods entering the US worth more than $100 were now subject to import duties and Guernsey Post has worked with Royal Mail to find a solution.

Under the new regulations, customers must provide detailed shipment information, including the correct HS Tariff Code for each item and its country of origin.

An HS Tariff Code is a 10-digit number used internationally to classify goods for customs purposes.

Guernsey Post said: “Initially, postal operators worldwide faced uncertainty about how duties would be collected and what additional data and documentation were required.

Guernsey Post has collaborated extensively with Royal Mail to implement a Bailiwick solution that meets these new international customs standards.”

What customers need to know:

• Parcel weight limit: up to 2kg with a maximum declared value of $800.

• Duty payment: Duties must be paid at the time of posting, along with a £1

administration fee.

• Customs declaration: When completing the electronic customs form, customers must provide the 10-digit HS Tariff Code for each item in the package and the country of origin for each item.

Customers are advised to complete their electronic customs declaration online before visiting a Post Office branch, but forms will still be available in-branch if necessary.

Gifts valued at less than $100 and letters or documents remain duty free, but the customs declaration form and £1 administration fee are still required.

The new system started on Thursday.
