Newborn baby found abandoned ‘with cord still attached’ in street by postman

A newborn baby has been found abandoned in a London street with his umbilical cord reportedly still attached.

Police were called by a member of the public at about 11.40am today after reports of an abandoned baby boy in Hackney.

The infant was found wearing a grey babygrow and a grey hat. He was wrapped up in a white knitted blanket.

A woman has claimed her granddad found the baby in a bush as he was doing his round as a postman. She said a colleague initially thought he could hear ‘kittens’.

In an appeal to try and help find his mum, Lauren Smith wrote: “London and surrounding. URGENT.

“My grandad has just found a baby abandoned in a bush on Sandringham road hackney e8.

“If you know anything please contact the police. The baby is ok but might not have been if he wasn’t found!”

“He’s a postman was doing his round. His colleague thought he could hear kittens in the bush so they went to check and it was this bubba,” she continued.

In another comment, Lauren wrote: “The way they hid it in a bush his cord was still attached.”

She added that the mother “needs to be found” and asked people in London and surrounding areas to share her plea.

Lauren said her granddad was in “complete shock”.

She wrote in a Facebook comment: “He took the baby into the Royal Mail van to warm him up and called the police. About 7 cars showed up so at least they’re on the ball!”

The photo of the baby has been shared more than 10,000 times on Facebook.

Many have commented showing their concern for both the baby and his mum.

“I’m devastated, pray they find his mummy. She needs help and support, and to know her baby is safe,” one said.

“I feel broken for her.”

Another wrote: “Omg, so so glad he was found, can’t begin to imagine otherwise.”

Police are appealing for the baby’s mum to come forward so they can help her receive medical care and support.

A statement by the Metropolitan Police said: “London Ambulance Service also attended and the baby boy is currently being cared for at an east London hospital.

“Following initial enquiries, it appears this baby was born outside of a hospital environment.”
