Newcastle road cordoned off for hours after man falls ill outside supermarket

A section of Shields Road, in Byker, was closed for several hours after emergency services were called to assist an elderly man who is reported to have collapsed outside Morrisons

Police taped off a large section of a busy Newcastle route this morning after a man was found unwell outside a supermarket. A section of Shields Road, in Byker, was closed for several hours after emergency services were called to assist an elderly man who is reported to have collapsed outside Morrisons.

One local told ChronicleLive that the man “fell heavily” on the ground at about 6.15am and was then taken to hospital. North East Ambulance Service confirmed that the man was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI).

It was shortly before 6.30am this morning that emergency services were first alerted to the incident. North East Ambulance Service dispatched a specialist paramedic and two emergency ambulance crews to the scene, where they were joined by Northumbria Police.

Officers placed a huge cordon on Shields Road, which ran from Morrisons to the junction of Raby Street. Four police vehicles remained in attendance.

The road was closed between Morrisons and the junction of Raby Street throughout rush hour and was able to reopen in both directions just before 9.45am. During the closure, bus passengers heading into Newcastle were warned of diversions.

A commuter heading to town on the number 63 Stagecoach bus told ChronicleLive: “The Stagecoach driver is warning everyone how Shields Road is closed because of an incident and that he’s having to be diverted.”

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Just after 6.30am this morning (Wednesday), we received a report of a man collapsed on Shields Road in Byker. Emergency services are currently on scene, and the road is currently closed from Morrisons to the junction of Raby Street.”

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 6.25am on 18 March 2026 to reports of a medical incident outside Morrisons Shields Road in Byker, Newcastle. We sent a specialist paramedic alongside two emergency ambulance crews and took one elderly male patient to the RVI for further treatment.”
