Watch: Royal Mail worker sacked for fighting on his morning round

A hot-headed postman who was involved in a street fight while doing his round in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, has been sacked.

Video footage of the brawl, which happened on Ellis Street, was circulated on social media.

It shows the agency worker wearing the trademark Royal Mail uniform while making his way to a letter box before stopping abruptly.

He then appears to enter into a dispute with his soon-to-be sparring partner, who approaches from across the road.

The person recording the footage can be heard saying: “F***ing eejits. And I thought I was going to have a boring day.”

The two men after spotting each other in the street

The video goes on to show the delivery man throwing his mail bag to the ground before aggressively approaching the other man, who appears to throw the first dig.

The pair swing a number of punches before the postie gets the upper hand and inflicts multiple blows while sitting on top of his foe, who at one point is dragged out of view of the camera.

The fights continues into the middle of the road, with the overpowered man frantically wriggling around in a bid to free himself while passing drivers are forced to manoeuvre around the melee.

At one point, the postman picks him up and then throws him to the ground before they negotiate a short-lived truce.

After helping each other recover their possessions, which had been strewn along the street, the fighting erupts again in the middle of the road and continues until a car pulls up beside the brawlers, who then part ways.

The brawl spilled onto the road

The incident did not affect the postman’s delivery schedule too much.

While out of breath, he can be seen going back to get his bag before gesturing to the stunned owner of a property that he is okay and handing his mail over to him.

A source told Sunday Life the duo filmed fighting were old friends who had fallen out and were involved in a personal feud “which has been running for some time”.

“They had been arguing with each other before they crossed paths that day. It all just came to a bit of a head,” the source added.

It is understood the Royal Mail worker had only been in the job a few weeks when the fight broke out.

Royal Mail said it was investigating the incident but the agency worker was later sacked

The company initially said it was looking into the incident.

It added: “We expect the highest standards from our staff at all times.

“This footage has been raised with the local delivery office for further investigation”.

A relative of the man at the centre of the investigation subsequently confirmed on social media he had lost his job because of the fight.
