Northwich businesses step up for cancer-stricken boy’s birthday

Ollie Jackson, from Rudheath, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a form of blood cancer, in October 2022,

His treatment at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, which includes intense chemotherapy and bonemarrow transplants, could last up to three-and-a-half years, according to his doting nan, Michelle Dickson.

As Ollie’s sixth birthday approaches, Michelle wanted to make it extra special, so put a shoutout on Facebook group, Ask Northwich, for suggestions for a circus-themed party for him on Sunday, August 13.

She was ‘absolutely overhelmed’ by the response when no less than 14 Northwich businesses rushed forward to offer their services, free of charge.

The list includes a venue provider, a caterer, a bouncy castle supplier, a photographer, a DJ, a magician, two balloon artists, a stilt walker, a cake maker, a set designer, a personalised gift maker, a facepainter, and a sensory play specialist.

Michelle said: “Our whole family is absolutely overwhelmed by the response.

“Words can’t express how much we appreciate all the wonderful people who have come forward with offers of help, free of charge, to make it such a special day for Ollie.

“I put on Ask Northwich any recommendations for a circus-themed kids party.

“I had a massive response from all these different small businesses and companies who all want to do it for free.

“I wanted them to have recognition for what they’re doing for us as a family.

“It’s so wonderful how the town has pulled together, and I just though it needed to be acknowledged.”

Michelle said Ollie deserves the party of a lifetime as he has really been through the mill since his diagnosis.

She added: “Since then, he has spent more time in hospital than out.

“He’s not had a very good time. The first bout of chemo he had was unresponsive, so they put him on to the intense chemo.

“He’s having a bone marrow transplant this week because every time he has chemo, his levels are dropping and they’re not sure the chemo is actually working again.

“He has had a really rough time, but he’s also been a really big hero.”
