Nottingham city centre traffic was at a standstill on Thursday night as roadworks caused Theatre Royal visitors to sit in congestion until midnight waiting to get out – with some even abandoning their cars.
There were reports of queuing traffic in the area of Talbot Street after a Theatre Royal production on Thursday, September 26. One theatre-goer, Kate Simpson, said: “When I got back to the car, everywhere around Talbot Street was gridlocked and, after waiting 30 mins without moving at all, I had to abandon the car and walk up to Canning Circus to get a taxi.”
A notice from Theatre Royal said: “Work is currently under way on the large roundabout where Maid Marian Way meets Derby Road. Lower Parliament Street will be completely transformed into a T-junction, creating an area safer for cycling and walking. This means there is likely to be congestion around the car parks to the west of the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall.”
As well as warning about the road works, Theatre Royal has also warned visitors A52 bridge repairs around the QMC, as well as delays that may arise from the Robin Hood Marathon and Goose fair.
Kate Simpson added: “When I went back to the hotel to get my car this morning, they said that people had still been queuing to get out at midnight. Apparently, this has been the case for the past three nights due to roadworks on Maid Marian Way.
“I wonder if people need to be aware that this is happening every night before they head out. People were very cross and some were panicking as you we were totally trapped!”
The Maid Marian Way roadworks are expected to go on until Sunday, October 6, with major improvements planned for the busy city centre roundabout.
