A couple who are on a mission to visit every pub in the country enjoyed a visit to Spalding’s bars over the weekend.
Dale Harvey and Holly Booth – the duo behind The Great British Pub Crawl on Facebook – toured around 12 pubs in the town. They say the establishments they visited were friendly but that it is a ‘travesty’ that the pretty White Horse is shut.
The Nottinghamshire-based couple have now visited a total of 1,700 pubs and decided to travel to Spalding on Sunday after pulling the town from their ‘Jar of Randomness’.
Dale, who has more than 8,000 followers on social media, said: “We like Spalding.
“Everyone we met was really friendly and welcoming. It seemed a nice friendly little town.
“The White Horse is a beautiful pub and it is a travesty that it has been closed.”
The couple started off their tour in the Pied Calf before moving onto the ‘quirky’ Priors Oven and Bentley’s.
They also enjoyed the hospitality in The Punchbowl, and The Ivy Wall, Oscar’s, The Red Lion, Lincoln Arms, The Moorings, Royal Mail Cart and the Drayman’s Arms were visited.
Dale said: “Our favourite pub in Spalding was The Water’s Edge.
“It is a really nice team and felt like a real community pub. All of the regulars were talking about how nice the pub and the landlord Liam were.”
Here’s their verdict on the town’s pubs:
Pied Calf: “Our first stop upon our arrival was a Greene King establishment called the ‘Pied Calf’ where we were greeted by a very friendly landlord.”
The Priors Oven: “I suppose you’d call this an ‘Ale & Cider Bar’ predominantly as there are no fancy taps on the bar and no mountain of spirits on the back bar, just good quality ale and ciders served up with a smile and a friendly chat.”
Bentley’s: “The ladies serving us in here were mega friendly and offered us a little insight on some pubs that we may not have found on our walk around the town centre.”
The Punchbowl: “Certainly on a Sunday, the clientele were friendly and the service was warm and welcoming.”
The Ivy Wall: “It’s a ‘Spoons… and what more is there really to say?”
Oscar’s: “The place was pretty busy for a Sunday afternoon and seemed to have a nice vibe about it.”
The Red Lion: “Still has the feel of a grand old hotel that has seen many faces come and go over the years.”
The Lincoln Arms: “The landlady was really friendly and this is a community pub that definitely values its regulars and new faces a like”
The Moorings: “The attitude of being made to feel in the way and unwelcome because all we had was a drink, would make us not return at all.”
The Royal Mail Cart: “The lounge side is decked out beautifully and the public bar has TV’s and a pool table in.”
The Water’s Edge: “A top pub, run by a top bloke and somewhere that we will definitely be calling in on every time we are in the area.”
