Nuneaton Wilko in its glory days after building finally pulled down

As this week has seen the end of an era for Nuneaton town centre, we have taken a look back at the former home of Wilko on Church Street. The final walls of the building were pulled down on Wednesday (January 7).

It marks not only the end of the town’s association with Wilko, but also with the building as it also once played home to Sainsbury’s before it moved to its current home in Vicarage Street.

The skyline around a large part of Church Street will soon be changed for good as the demolition of the Wilko building forms part of the works to create the new £24.4 million ‘Justice Walk’ development. This will eventually see the creation of a new library and business centre in the area.

Warwickshire County Council said that the initial phase of the demolition, which will also include the former Powell House, also known to locals as the Tax Office, as well as the former Royal Mail sorting office.

In our gallery below, featuring some images from our friends at Nuneaton Memories, we take a look back at Wilko through the ages.
