A NUMBER of tributes have been made a ‘man of many talents’ who had a passion for sport throughout his life.
Terry Clegg sadly passed away on September 9, in the early hours of the morning at the age of 76.
Born on September 17, 1944, in Burnley, Terry lived very close to Lowerhouse Cricket Club and developed a passion for sports at an early age.
As a cricketer, he played for over four decades and acted as Captain for many prominent teams during his career.
His sporting life saw him play for Kendal, Burnley, Belvedere, Read, Oswaldwistle. Penrith, and others. Under his guidance several teams achieved great league success.
Sonja McDermott, Terry’s stepdaughter, said: “He was a very generous man. He was very well known across the North for his cricket career and knowledge. He was a feared fast bowler. He was a left-hand batter but a right-hand quick bowler which was very unique. He had an aggressive style and a real never say die attitude.
“He was passionate about the game and was devoted to anything and everything he did. Especially with his family and friends.”
“During his life he worked in finances and banking. He worked for Lloyds for a long time but was made redundant during the recession in the 80’s. He continued to work for himself in finance, set up a second hard car business and even worked for the Royal Mail.
“We moved from Burnley to Read in 1983 and he continued to play cricket there. It was the last five years of his life he became a social member for Euxton cricket club. He used to attend all of his grandson’s games.
“He will be missed by everyone who knew him.”
Chairman of Euxton Cricket Club, Phil Barber said: “Terry was a cricket fanatic and has been all his life. He became a club member and a devoted fan.
“He played for so many clubs, and it was a pleasure we sadly never got to enjoy ourselves. He was never afraid to speak his mind. He had a very critical eye. “A man with so much experience, you’d be a fool not to listen to him.”
