Gillian Thompson won the cash as part of Royal Mail’s Magical Card prize draw, which is giving away £500,000 in prizes nationally this festive season.
The part-time admin worker is planning to spend the winnings on “Christmas presents and treats” for her daughter and four-year-old granddaughter.
Royal Mail’s Magical Card prize draw is running throughout December, ending on Christmas Eve.
To be in with a chance of winning, participants simply need to send a Christmas card to someone they know, label it with the word ‘magical’ and submit it online. More information about how to enter can be found on the Royal Mail website.
If they are successful, the winnings are shared between the sender and the recipient.
Gillian’s card was sent to her friend Bethan, who she met through her parents many years ago and have get in touch via letters. The two have remained pen friends, despite moving far apart.
Sending Christmas cards is a tradition Gillian looks forward to every year.
She said: “I couldn’t believe it – I was absolutely speechless for once!
“I’ve never won anything before, just the odd little voucher. I love sending Christmas cards – it’s traditional and still gives me that thrill of seeing what’s come through the door. It reminds me of when I was growing up.”
In total, Royal Mail will be giving away £500,000 to over a thousand winners.
There’s a daily £10,000 to be won, as well as a £100,000 giveaway on Christmas Eve.
