Opening hours at Royal Mail parcel collection office in Dumfries to be slashed

Opening hours at the main Royal Mail parcel collection office in Dumfries are to be slashed next month.

The site in Great King Street will see its hours reduced from 51 to 30 as of August 8.

Part of the changes will see the delivery office open just two hours, from 8am-10am, on a Monday.

South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth said: “These changes will be another blow to mail services in our region. Most people are at work during these new opening times and will therefore struggle to get to the delivery office to pick up their parcels.

“I plan to write to Royal Mail to demand answers about this without delay.”

He added: “Having a Post Office and Post Office services in the community is vital for so many of my constituents, particularly those who are older or people who can’t travel easily.

“People often pick up parcels at a Post Office, which is becoming more and more difficult with all the closures. Now Royal Mail are following the Post Office by inconveniencing customers by making it impossible to pick up parcels and letters at the delivery office outwith the normal working day.”

Mr Smyth added: “This latest move is another blow to the region, in particular those in Dumfries who need to use the service at a reasonable time.”

The Royal Mail was contacted for comment.
