Oxford’s homeless must be among first for Covid vaccine, say Lib Dems

THE homeless must be made a priority to receive the Covid 19 vaccine, Oxford Liberal Democrats are urging.

They are calling on the city council to urgently publish plans to ensure the jab reaches every person on the streets.

Homeless Oxfordshire estimates that 56 people aged over 22 are homeless in the city with a further 40 under 22.

James Cox, Lib Dem candidate for Walton Manor and University Parks, said: “Living on the street means you’re in contact with hundreds of people every single day. Living in insecure or temporary accommodation means you can’t stay home to stay safe, putting you even more at risk of picking up the virus and spreading it further.

“Add to that those experiencing homelessness are more likely to have underlying health conditions makes a compelling case that they be prioritised.”

Councillor Andrew Gant, leader of the Oxford Liberal Democrat council group, added: “Our first priority is to ensure that we protect the most vulnerable people in our community, those whose lives and health is most at risk from contracting Covid-19.

“Councils are in a unique position to ensure this happens. Not only is it their statutory duty but they have the local knowledge and networks to know who and where best to target.”
