Oxfordshire man recognised for saving teenage girl’s life

Tony Kershaw’s evening took a dramatic turn on Thursday, December 12, following a training session with Wantage Lifesaving Club.

His wife called to say she had found an unconscious teenage girl nearby.

Once Mr Kershaw arrived at the scene, he saw someone was already there and was calling 999.

He quickly assessed the situation and began performing CPR as the girl was not breathing.

A passing nurse joined him, and a defibrillator was located and applied, but it only advised further CPR, which Mr Kershaw continued until emergency services arrived.

Thanks to his quick-thinking and efforts, the girl was breathing unaided by the time police and ambulance crews arrived.

Paramedics assessed her health and took her to hospital. She was reunited with her family that weekend.

Last Thursday, January 23, Wantage Lifesaving Club presented Mr Kershaw with a certificate to celebrate his efforts.

The Royal Life Saving Society UK said it is “proud to recognise Tony’s hard work to save a life”.

Since 1891, the Royal Life Saving Society UK has been sharing its expertise in water safety, lifesaving, and lifeguarding to educate everyone to enjoy water safely.

It is the leading provider of lifesaving and lifeguarding training, and water safety education in the UK and Ireland.
