A fashion designer who worked closely with Princess Diana, has claimed that she would be supportive of Megxit.

Paul Costelloe, 74, from Dublin, who worked for the royal for 15 years, said ‘she wouldn’t be upset about Harry stepping back,’ as he and Meghan prepare to swap official royal engagements for a more independent family life.

‘She would say “Do what you need to do”, definitely. She was not a royalist at all, she was a person of the people and she put her children first before anything else,’ he told Evoke.

Paul who worked alongside Diana until her death in 1997, reflected on his friendship with the royal during a recent conversation at London Fashion Week.

They first met in 1982, when Diana visited his shop in Windsor.

He said: ‘She was lovely to dress and she was a very honest, sincere person. She was family orientated and she had a sense of humour – she liked to smile.’

Among the outfits Paul designed for Diana is a skirt that she wore in 1993 while in India and a pink suit worn as part of her official tour in Canada.

The father-of-seven has also designed for Princess Anne and Zara Tindall, but is yet to work for either the Duchess of Cambridge or Sussex.

Meghan and Harry are believed to be on course to complete their last official engagements as senior royals towards the end of February.

The couple who will start their new life in Canada, are expected to attend the Royal Family at the Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey on March 9.

They have axed their team at Buckingham Palace and will stop receiving funds from the sovereign grant on 31 March.

Paul added that William was the well behaved one out of the two brothers, while Harry was ‘the little troublemaker’.
