Pennington Flash walkers stranded by Storm Claudia tree

John Bullen was out for a walk in Pennington Flash Nature Reserve in Leigh, but when he went to leave – he was told the road was blocked.

A tree had fallen in Storm Claudia at around 1.30pm yesterday (November 14), and with only one road in and out, he was stuck.

John said: “As we were leaving, people said to us ‘you’re not going to get out – a tree has come down’.

“It was surprising – it didn’t seem that bad to me, and then suddenly there’s a tree down.

“Perhaps it was worse than I thought!

“An older couple were panicking because they were doing the school run and worried they wouldn’t be able to get out in time.

“The Royal Mail man got stuck there too – he called at Pennington Flash to drop the post off and he was on his way out.”

Luckily for the stranded walkers, the Pennington Flash Rangers were quickly on site and they cleared the tree by 2.15pm.

John said: “The rangers were there with chainsaws and they cut it up – they did a fantastic job.”

Storm Claudia has caused disruption across the Greater Manchester area – with fallen trees blocking tram and train services.

Yesterday morning travellers were told that Metrolink services between Bury and Whitefield would be cancelled after a tree fell on the overhead power lines.

The Bee Network estimated that the damage will take “most of the weekend to repair”.

Northern Rail services between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport have also been disrupted by another fallen tree.
