Pensioner sends letter thanking Royal Mail postman for saving his life

A Royal Mail postman has received a grateful thank you letter after he helped save an elderly man’s life.

The pensioner, who is 75 and suffers with Parkinson’s disease, had fallen down in his home the day before and spent the night stuck on the floor.

He was found by the postman, named only as Matt, in the morning and rushed to hospital, where he spent five days recovering.

In the letter, the wrote: ‘If Matt had not found me, I was not due any visitors. I was becoming weak and would not have survived.

‘I will always be grateful to Matt for doing that little bit extra and saving me.’

Royal Mail shared the letter on their Twitter account and called Matt’s actions ‘heroic’.

The man, whose name was hidden in the post, stated that two callers had come out to his property during the night, but both had left without realising his ‘predicament’.

When Matt came to the door, he then managed to open it with his foot, allowing the postman to push himself inside.

Matt quickly contacted a neighbour and rang for an ambulance.

The pensioner also added that the kind-hearted postman had since been back to the house ‘several times’ to check on him.

He wrote: ‘I have been able to thank him personally. He continues to knock and make sure I am okay.’

The letter was sent to the Royal Mail to ‘commend’ Matt for his actions.

A spokesperson for the postal service told Metro.co.uk: ‘We’re very proud of Matt and his actions in helping one of his elderly customers while out on his daily delivery.

‘Royal Mail’s postmen and women are out in the community six days a week, delivering to around 30 million addresses across the UK every day.

‘Matt’s actions demonstrate exactly why our postmen and women are such highly valued members of their local communities.’
