Pharmacy2U shakes up pet prescriptions amid CMA probe into sector with expanded pet health platform

Pharmacy2U has today relaunched its veterinary care platform, as Pharmacy2U Pet Health, becoming the only online pharmacy to offer pet services alongside ‘human’ health services via an app that customers can access on the go.

The website (Pharmacy2U.co.uk) and app now gives people the ability to look after the health, wellbeing and prescriptions of their whole family using a combined basket feature – making shopping for health and wellness products, as well as NHS and pet prescriptions, easier than ever. Pharmacy2U will now offer pet owners the same leading medicine availability and free Royal Mail 48-hour deliveries, enjoyed by its 1.8 million customers in England.

This comes as a major probe is underway with the CMA investigating prescription pricing in the veterinary sector, with a final decision due to be announced in early spring. The watchdog has rung the alarm on a lack of price transparency, high costs and ineffective competition within the industry – finding average vet prices rose 63% between 2016 and 2023, well above the rate of inflation.

Pharmacy2U is expanding further into pet health at a time when consumers are looking for convenient and more affordable pet medication. The PharmPet Co, acquired in 2024 by Pharmacy2U remains active and has grown 100% over the past year, driven in part by these market forces. Pharmacy2U Pet Health expands the offer and will provide the same great value and convenience for pet owners.

The integration marks the latest step in Pharmacy2U’s rapid growth, following the acquisition of online pharmacy LloydsDirect in 2023, a full business rebrand in spring 2025, and achieving B Corp status last month. Pharmacy2U is the UK’s third largest distributor of prescriptions, but this integration takes it one step closer to becoming a one-stop shop for digital healthcare for the whole family, including furry ones.

Neil Younger, Veterinary Services Director, Pharmacy2U (Original founder of The PharmPet Co) says: “Pet owners are often unaware that in some cases they get their pet’s medication up to 50% cheaper, by simply going online. For millions of people across the nation, pets are seen as another member of the family, so it is only fair that owners can manage their medicines in the same way they do for the rest of the family.

“We created a family business, with a lifelong love of animals, so we understand just how important it is to treat pet owners fairly. From cats, dogs, horses, rabbits, birds and reptiles, no owner wants added concerns when a pet falls sick. Becoming part of Pharmacy2U will give us greater reach, better tools, and we’re well aligned on our core values.”

Founded in 1999, Pharmacy2U was a pioneer of the electronic prescription service (EPS) and has grown to become the UK’s largest online pharmacy. It is on a mission to give patients greater control of their healthcare, including value and convenience, for pets, just as for humans, with unbeatable availability and access to medication.
