Picnic to start operations in Paris and Berlin

Dutch online supermarket Picnic has signalled its intention to start operating in Paris and Berlin as of March 2023. It already works into several cities in France and Germany.

Picnic has been operating in Germany since 2018 in a partnership with the Edeka supermarket group, and has been working into three northern cities in France since 2021.

The online grocer has said it is to seek a building application for a distribution centre in Berlin soon. Initially the unit will have little in the way of mechanisation or automation so operations can be started quickly.

It also has plans to work into Hamburg and Frankfurt soon after. Picnic has plans to move into Poland and Italy in the next year, but for some reason has not announced plans to work into Belgium despite the fact it will soon operate in all countries with a land border with the country…

The online grocery industry has done well in recent years, offering profits to businesses that took advantage of the pandemic. This is unlike the fast-delivery business where the demand was there but not the profitability.
