But Maureen Dunlop – one of a pioneering group of women pilots who flew fighter and bomber aircraft during the Second World War – took five attempts to pass her driving test, prompting her son to express surprise that she had not needed further attempts.
Dunlop and her fellow female pilots of No 15 Ferry Pool at Hamble feature in a new set of stamps commemorating the vital and varied contribution of women in the Second World War. The stamps will be issued on May 5, three days ahead of the anniversary of VE Day.
David Gold, of Royal Mail, said: “Their bravery and sacrifice is often overlooked, but their work helped to drive some of the post-war social changes that eventually saw equal opportunities and equal pay legislation.
“We must also remember the women who supported the war effort at home, managing households despite the unceasing demands of total war.”
The 10 stamps in the main set, released on Thursday, illustrate the huge range of work undertaken by women during the conflict and include a rare photograph showing female codebreakers working at Bletchley.
