PKP LHS beats own first half-year record: 29% higher volume than in 2023

Polish rail freight operator PKP LHS has broken its own first half-year volume record. Between January and July of 2024, it transported over 6 million tonnes of freight. This is nearly a third higher than during the same period in 2023, at 29 per cent. The company also reports infrastructure successes to make future growth possible.

Most notably, intermodal imports into Poland from Ukraine more than doubled and amounted to 101 per cent. Intermodal exports registered more modest growth at 50 per cent. PKP LHS highlights the month of June as successful, during which it saw a growth of 65 per cent in overall transport volumes.

PKP LHS operates on a single line that connects Ukraine and Poland. It profits from growing transport volumes entering Poland from Ukraine, as the EU and Ukraine have attempted to improve mutual economic cooperation since the start of the war.

More than 30 million for infrastructure

Besides growth in volumes, PKP LHS notes infrastructure successes. At the stations Zamość Bortatycze and Hrubieszów, the company built additional tracks and modernised lighting and power infrastructure. According to PKP LHS, the investment at Hrubieszów “will increase the possibilities of receiving trains from Ukraine, forming trains towards individual points on the LHS line and shortening the time of wagons’ stay at the station.”

In 2024, the company plans to invest an additional 137 million Polish zloty (32,2 million euros) in infrastructure upgrades.
