Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District leaders are looking at resuming live online streaming of school board meetings, a district spokewoman said.
Community members have been pressuring the district on social media, saying livestreaming access should be part of every board meeting. Some argued in-person attendance may be limited by COVID-19 concerns.
The district had offered an online option that was curtailed last month when the state lifted the latest stay-at-home order, spokeswoman Alyssa Griffiths said via email. The school board’s meeting Tuesday, Feb. 9, was open for people to attend in person.
One person attending the meeting did their own livestream from the audience on Facebook.
“The district is researching options to bring online access to board meetings to our community,” Griffiths said.
School board member Leandra Blades said Friday she had hoped that Tuesday’s meeting would have been available online.
She said it should be a goal of the district and board to make meetings and district developments as open to the public as possible.
“People have questions and those questions are not always getting answered,” said Blades, who said she had anticipated that future livestreaming would have been a topic on the Tuesday agenda, but it was not.
Close-captioning for the hearing impaired is supposed be included in the livestreaming of a board meeting, she said, to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
“I know district is looking into the cost of that,” Blades said.
Many Orange County school districts provide livestreaming of their board meetings, including the Newport-Mesa Unified School District, Saddleback Valley Unified School District and the Santa Ana Unified School District, and most cities make their council meeting available online. In many cases, since the start of the pandemics, live audiences have been limited at meetings.
