Plans launched to turn former sorting office into 691-bed residential scheme

Godwin Developments has launched a public consultation to build a 691-bed student accommodation scheme on the site of a former Royal Mail building in Nottingham city centre.

Godwin bought the Bendigo Building, at 1A Brook Street, from Ken Grundy’s Emma Property Management in June of last year. Now, the company wants to turn the site into a 12-storey scheme aimed at the student market.

A statement as part of the public consultation for the scheme reads: “Nottingham City Council have a need to facilitate the student population of both universities. There is currently an under-supply of student accommodation in Nottingham, especially for second and third year students and post-graduates who tend to live in homes intended for families in the city’s neighbourhoods.

“Providing 691 student bedrooms will contribute towards meeting continued demand for student accommodation and assist in maintaining or freeing up family accommodation elsewhere.”

Emma Property named the former Royal Mail office the Bendigo Building because of its close proximity to the memorial to William ‘Bendigo’ Thompson, Nottingham’s famous 19th-century bare-knuckle fighter.

Architects for the scheme are RG+P
