People in Plymouth are being told to remain vigilant when doing their Christmas shopping online this year.

Citizens Advice are warning of scammers targeting consumers, as the pressures of the festive season remain high.

With very little time left until the big day, there are concerns that people may rush decisions that could end up costing them a lot of money.

Tom Godwin, from the Plymouth branch, says if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is:

“Please be aware that there are very sophisticated scams contacting you about renewing your Amazon Prime membership, or a parcel not being delivered.

“If you don’t think something looks fully legit, or you don’t know where it’s come from, stop – maybe talk to somebody else. Just step back and take your time and never be pressured into something.”

According to the Office for National Statistic, the proportion of total sales that took place online has grown by over 10% when comparing the period of the pandemic this year (March to August) against the same period last year.

Tom says they have been seeing a growing number in consumer issues as a result of this:

“A lot of us have been sat at home since March, with a lot of us doing online shopping.

“If you have access to a credit, try to always pay for things on a credit card because you’ll have a lot a more protection.

“There’s also an awful lot of protection through PayPal and certain marketplaces – like eBay – have got a much higher level of protection now for consumers if goods go missing, or if they’re faulty, or if they arrive and they’re not what they said they were.

“You should always try to deal with the seller first, but if you’ve got no joy then speak to the online marketplace or store or contact your credit card company.”

Citizens Advice also have a consumer helpline to support people with these issues. The free to use number is 0808 223 11 33.

Royal Mail are also advising customers to allow plenty of time for posting, particularly for international deliveries.
