Plymouth to be drenched as Met Office issues 12-hour weather warning

Flooding is expected

The Met Office has issued another weather warning as people have been told flooding is possible.

The yellow weather warning for rain is in place from midday until 11.59pm tomorrow (Tuesday, November 11) and covers Plymouth and the wider South West which has been urged to prepare for disruption.

Forecasters at the Exeter-based Met Office said heavy rain will begin in the morning, continuing through the afternoon and evening, and will bring southerly gales.

Forecasters have said homes and properties may be at risk of flooding.

Widespread travel disruption is also expected as spray and flooding on roads may affect travel times.

Most areas are expected to see up to 40mm of rain, with some reaching up to 70mm.

The Met Office also said the warning may be extended or it may issue a new warning for Wednesday (November 12) as further rain is expected.

The Met Office said: “Given recent wet weather, and saturated ground in places, this could lead to flooding in a few spots. More generally, difficult driving conditions are likely for the evening commute in particular, with delays due to slow traffic and the increased possibility of accidents.”

The Environment Agency (EA) monitors water levels and while no flood alerts or warnings are currently in place, it has said sea and river levels are high.

South West weather forecast:

Today: A band of heavy showers will sweep eastwards through the morning, with a chance of thunder. Brighter skies following with sunny intervals and scattered heavy showers. Blustery winds at times. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Tonight: Scattered showers this evening, then mostly dry at first overnight. Turning wet and windy by the morning with strong southerly winds developing in coastal regions. Briefly chilly then milder later. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Tuesday: A windy and occasionally wet day with periods of rain, heavy at times. Some drier periods are likely, especially during the afternoon. Very mild. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Remaining unsettled and mild throughout this period. Further periods of rain are likely, occasionally heavy and persistent for some, but some drier and clearer intervals likely too. Windy at times.
