Fans of the pub have continued to support it online
An unassuming quaint pub sent dozens of diners home feeling worse for wear after they were poisoned by its Christmas menu.
The shocking incident unfolded at a popular guest house pub in the small village of Llangynwyd, in south Wales, which has a glowing reputation amongst locals.
However, Public Health Wales confirmed that 43 people fell ill with food poisoning just hours after tucking into a Sunday lunch at the Corner House Inn.
The health body said multiple customers reported feeling sick and experiencing diarrhoea after eating at the pub, while an investigation discovered the illness was caused by a food poisoning organism called Clostridium perfringens, reports The Mirror.
The restaurant has been dubbed a “cosy” and “welcoming” pub by some, often praised by visitors who envy those who get to call it their local. But the site is now working with authorities to address health concerns.
“We have received 43 reports of illness in people who ate food prepared at the premises. We can confirm that Clostridium perfringens has been identified as the cause of this illness,” a spokesman for Public Health Wales explained.
“The risk to the public is low, and we do not expect to see further cases associated with this incident.”
The Corner House Inn acknowledged the incident and confirmed that it “will be honest throughout and will continue to do so”, as the investigation into the 43 illnesses continues.
“We are still working with them to ensure the safety of our customers and staff,” the establishment added in a Facebook post. Despite the fiasco, the Corner House Inn will continue to open and run its restaurant.

The Corner House Inn is also a guest house, offering more than traditional pub grub. Starters on the main menu include items such as prawn salad, creamy garlic mushrooms and Chinese duck & hoisin bonbons. Their starters range from £3.50 to £6.50.
Its main courses at the site include a selection of steaks and other meats like gammon steak or a rack of pork ribs. Some classic pub items are also on the menu, such as a steak and ale pie or a beer-battered cod.
‘Unpleasant experience’
It boasts a 4.5 rating on Google from more than 450 reviews, earning praise from users such as: “The food was excellent, portions are massive, and the atmosphere of the pub is just what you’d hope for.
“Just a heads-up: it’s popular, so it’s best to call ahead for lunch or dinner reservations to make sure you get a table.”
Another happy customer shared: “Service was excellent, along with the great food.”
Despite this, other recent TripAdvisor reviews show some have been left unimpressed after their visit, complaining about the staff and service at the spot.
“Very rude staff couldn’t cope with the party of 15,” one comment said, adding that they were “rushed us to book our food, it was a very unpleasant experience from start to finish. Average food, nothing special.”
Another reviewer reported: “I used to love this place, but the service and table manner of some of the staff is dreadful.
“There used to be a lovely atmosphere here, but instead you get disgruntled employees rushing you along, and certain bar staff that treat everything like it’s a major inconvenience to them.”
According to the Food Standards Agency, “Clostridium perfringens is a bacterium widespread in animals and the environment”.
People get ill from it after eating contaminated meat or poultry that’s been left out for too long.
Despite this, fans have thrown their support behind the pub on Facebook and said they will return to the pub despite the food poisoning incident, as one person wrote: “Won’t stop us eating with you”.
