Police issue update after bloody bone found in Nottingham

Nottinghamshire Police has issued an update after a “bloody, foul-smelling” bone was found near a footpath. A large cordon was in place close to the footpath between Top Valley Way and Bestwood Park Drive West, in Top Valley, from around 7pm on Friday, May 31 after the bone was discovered.

Officers remained at the scene throughout Saturday, June 1, while they determined whether the remains belonged to an animal or human. Later, a short statement released by police confirmed that the bone was not human remains, but belonged to an animal.

Chief Inspector Lisa Murray, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “I want to thank the community for their patience while we investigated this incident and for their assistance with our enquiries. When we get reports of this nature it’s essential we carry out a full investigation so thank you to everyone in the Top Valley community for being understanding.

“The bone has been removed from the area and our officers will now be closing the scene.”

A woman who lives close to the footpath, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “The investigation started last night. People in white suits turned up and we were told it was over a piece of remains being found.”

She said the cordon had been expanded after a while and that officers adopted a more serious tone with locals by around 10pm. Another bystander, who works nearby, said three police cars had rushed past to go to the path at around 7pm.

He said he had been told that a “20-30cm” bone, which was covered in blood and smelt foul, had been discovered. He said he had been shown a picture of it. “They [police] were there for ages”, he added.
