TWO police officers went to a sorting office to retrieve a parcel of £4,250 in cash — posted to fraudsters who had duped an 80-year-old grandmother.
PCs Jay Monk and Nicholas Beynon came to the rescue after one of the gang phoned the woman, pretending to be from her bank.
The scammer said money had been taken from her account but they would be able to get it back if she posted £4,250 to a London address.
The woman, named only as Anne, withdrew the cash from her local bank branch, put it in a box and sent it by Royal Mail special delivery.
But hours later the gran from Penarth, near Cardiff, had second thoughts and called police.
The two PCs got on the case and tracked down the parcel to the sorting office in Cardiff. Their boss Sgt Andy Mason said: ‘They acted quickly and using the tracking number, identified through the Royal Mail website that the parcel was leaving Cardiff for London. They managed to get to the parcel before the driver left.
‘It is highly possible that, had it left for London, we could have been chasing it through the system until it was too late and delivered. PC Monk and PC Beynon had the pleasure of returning the money back to Anne, who was absolutely delighted.’
Local community support officers checked in on Anne after speaking to her family, while a crime prevention team also visited her with advice on how to spot a scam.
The fraud was also reported to the Metropolitan Police and the Action Fraud team at the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau.
