Police sergeant who tackled blood-soaked attacker gets royal recognition

A BARROW police sergeant who tackled a blood-covered axeman was a runner up in the final of a major national award.

Sgt Kevin Milby received his award from His Royal Highness, the Duke of Kent, at a ceremony hosted by Falklands War hero Simon Weston at the Army and Navy Club, Pall Mall, London.

He was shortlisted in global hearing specialist’s Amplifon Awards for Brave Britons 2019 Service To Their Country category.

“It was a fantastic day and meeting the Duke of Kent was special,” said Sgt Milby.

“The awards were full of very special people and very special heroes.

“I was honoured to be counted amongst them.”

Sergeant Milby confronted Timothy Nickson in Dalton town centre, urging him to put down the axe but instead he entered a nearby shop.

Sgt Milby followed Nickson inside before single-handedly physically restraining and handcuffing him.

Nickson, then aged 43, of Broughton Road, Dalton, was jailed for seven years in November 2018 after admitting wounding with intent and possession of an axe.

The Service To Their Country champions were former bomb disposal expert Joel Snarr and Daniel Nicholson, who rescued three people from a burning light aircraft when it crash landed on the A40 in South Wales.
