The walkway, which was opened today (Friday) following delays with the railings being made, is part of the seafront’s Rene Howe Walk, but best known as ‘the Cascade’.

The opening of the walkway coincided with today’s opening of Ventnor’s traditional Easter bank holiday opening of the town’s iconic paddling pool.

Ventnor Town Council laid on activities and entertainment to celebrate the scheme’s completion — and even the sun came out after some bad weather this week.

Ventnor Carnival royalty, led by its queen, Suzie Carpenter, 11, joined by committee members, cut the ribbon to officially declare the new-look walkway open.

Children’s games took place near the paddling pool, and Ventnor Ukulele Group performed, with free Easter eggs handed out.

The Spyglass Inn provided some pirates, the Easter Bunny brought smiles to the faces of visitors, young and old, as did a performance of the zany Ventnor Comic Jazz Band.

The scheme to replace the rusting Victorian railings with those meeting modern safety standards and resurface the walkway has been undertaken by Island Roads with the help of multiple local contractors and suppliers.
