Posh Devon hotel evacuated – Plymouth Live

Residents were asked to evacuate a luxury hotel in Devon after a fire broke out. Emergency services responded to calls of a fire at Burgh Island Hotel yesterday, Thursday, March 27.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find a fire in the store of a kitchen in the hotel. The crew used two dry powder extinguishers and a positive-pressure ventilator to extinguish the fire.

The incident lasted for more than four hours, after which guests were able to return to their rooms. Fortunately, no one was harmed. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: “We responded to calls of a fire in the dry store of a kitchen at Burgh Island Hotel, yesterday at 13:13pm.

“All residents and staff were evacuated from the hotel while we put it out using two dry powder extinguishers and a positive pressure ventilator.

“We left the hotel at 17:37. No one was harmed, and the cause is currently unknown.”

A spokesperson for the hotel said: “We experienced a small fire at the hotel yesterday lunch time, which was attended by emergency fire services but had already been extinguished promptly by staff using six fire extinguishers.

“Guests were able to dine at the Pilchard Inn while the fire brigade inspected the scene and were subsequently able to return to their rooms and stay overnight, as these were unaffected by the incident. No one was harmed.

“The hotel will be closed for the weekend whilst we redecorate the food store and get rid of the residual smoke smell.”

Burgh Island hotel is an iconic Art Deco landmark and retreat, positioned on the secluded tidal island off Bigbury in South Devon. It is widely regarded as one of the foremost places to see and experience Art Deco in Europe at its best and most authentic.

A spokesperson for the hotel said that guests were evacuated in line with safety protocols but were able to dine at the Pilchard Inn and return to their rooms which were unaffected later that day.
