POST MODERN: Iconic pillar boxes in Pinner undergoing makeover

Something strange is happening to Pinner’s pillar boxes.

The iconic red post boxes caught residents’ attention as they were wrapped with notices reading, “Out of Service. Automated System coming soon!”

The unusual scene caught people’s attention on Monday, December 22, sparking local chatter and questions on social media.

Thankfully, the post pillars were temporarily closed. Royal Mail is upgrading its traditional boxes to a new, smart design. The next-generation postboxes will be solar-powered and able to accept parcels as well as letters, complete with a barcode scanner to make posting shoebox-sized packages easier.

Around 3,500 upgraded postboxes planned across the UK over the coming months, with Pinner included in the early wave.

The new boxes aim to modernise the service while keeping the classic red look, blending tradition with convenience in an era of growing parcel deliveries.
Residents can expect the boxes to return to service in early 2026, ready to handle letters and parcels with an exciting twist.
