Post Office branch set to close as services ‘to be reviewed’

The Post Office has confirmed its branch inside an Essex Morrisons Daily store will be closing along with the shop – with no immediate plans for a replacement branch. The Post Office said the store in Hutton Road, Shenfield will be closing on April 16 this year following the announcement of widespread cutbacks by the supermarket chain earlier this week.

The Morrisons Daily store is one of multiple shops and cafes that the chain will be closing across the UK this month. The Shenfield store houses a Post Office branch and it has acknowledged it will be a “huge inconvenience” to those needing postal services.

There are no other Post Office branches in Shenfield, with the closest being in Hutton and Brentwood. The Post Office has recommended customers use those branches while a review is carried out into services in the area.

A spokesman said: “We have been informed by Morrisons that they have made the difficult decision to close the Morrisons Daily store where Shenfield Broadway Post Office is located. The store is due to close on 16 April, and we are currently finalising the date when the Post Office will close. We apologise for the short notification.

“We fully recognise the inconvenience this will be for our customers. Whilst we assess nearby provision of Post Office services, we would encourage our customers to use Woodland, Rayleigh and Brentwood. We will now carry out a review of Post Office provision in the area.”

Eighteen market kitchens, 17 convenience stores, 13 florists, 35 meat counters, 35 fish counters and four pharmacies will be affected by Morrisons’ “shake up”. The majority of staff members affected by the changes, which will be made over the next few months, are expected to be deployed to roles elsewhere in the business, Morrisons said.

But there will be a total of around 365 employees at risk of redundancy. Rami Baitieh, Morrisons’ chief executive, said the changes were a “necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate” the chain and invest in areas that “customers really value”.

The nearest Post Office branches to the closing Shenfield site are:

  • Woodland Avenue Post Office, 62-64 Woodland Avenue, Hutton, CM13 1HH, distance 1.1 miles
  • Rayleigh Road Post Office, 208 Rayleigh Road, Hutton, CM13 1PN, distance 1.45 miles
  • Brentwood Post Office, 1-2 Baytree Centre, Brentwood, CM14 4BX, distance 1.91 miles
