Post office delays due to Royal Mail collection concerns

As previously reported, the store was set to open in the Malls on April 30 near The Anvil and the former Wilko store.

However, concerns were raised about the opening date after residents noticed the building appeared empty, with no work ongoing to renovate the space.

The Post Office confirmed on April 9 that the opening had been delayed indefinitely, however, no explanation was provided.

Now, it has been revealed that the delays were caused by logistical issues raised by Royal Mail with the collection of letters and parcels.

In a letter sent to MP Luke Murphy, the company explained the reasoning behind the April 30 date being pushed back.

The politician reached out to the Acting CEO of the Post Office, calling for clarity on the delays after residents raised concerns.

A spokesperson for the Post Office said that before a new branch can reopen, there are ‘a number of key components that have to be in place’, including arrangements for the collection of mail.

During final preparations for the opening of the branch, the company says that Royal Mail raised concerns about its capacity to provide the service.

They added that the postal service company has identified a possible solution, but that an agreement will be required with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

The operator for the branch cannot sign the lease until the issue is resolved, explained the Post Office spokesperson, adding that without a signed lease, it cannot access the premises to install essential infrastructure.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail told the Gazette: “Royal Mail is currently in discussions with the Council to agree how we can safely load our vehicles near the new Post Office.”

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has been contacted for further information.
