Post Office strikes: Full list of Post Offices set to close because of strikes – including one near Herts

Thousands of Post Office staff across more than 100 UK branches are set to strike next month over pay. Following the long-running dispute, members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) who work at 114 Crown Post Offices will strike next month.

Members have said that they will walk out on July 11 after the union rejected a pay offer. They have said that the pay offer was worth three per cent, on top of a freeze from April 2021, and a £500 lump sum.

Despite the strike affecting over 100 stores across the country, the Post Office has said that the majority of its 11,500 branches would be unaffected by the strikes. However, a post office near Hertfordshire in Barnet has been named as one of the locations that will be involved.

The Union called the pay offer “insulting” as prices rise as their fastest rate in 40 years. Inflation, in comparison, has just hit 9.1 per cent. The pay row involves counter staff, as well as those in clerical, administration and call centres.

A spokesman said: “There are 114 branches, typically in city centres, that are directly managed by Post Office and on previous strike days over a third have opened as usual. We’re disappointed that the CWU have made the decision to strike but remain hopeful that we can reach a pay agreement soon,” reports the Mirror.

CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey said: “No worker wants to be in this situation, but Post Office bosses can’t be surprised that callous decisions are challenged by our members. Our members feel betrayed and will not tolerate their living standards being smashed by people in charge of a public service that due to our members’ efforts made tens of millions of pounds in annual profits.”

Separately, more than 115,000 Royal Mail workers will today begin voting on whether to go on strike over pay. Ballot papers are being dispatched to CWU members from today, with the result on 19 July.

Royal Mail said it believed there were “no grounds for industrial action”. A spokesman said: “We offered a deal worth up to 5.5 per cent for CWU grade colleagues, the biggest increase we have offered for many years, which was rejected by the CWU.”

“We need to reach an agreement on the changes required to ensure Royal Mail can grow and remain competitive in a fast-moving industry, securing jobs for the future and retaining our place as the industry leader on pay and terms and conditions.”
